Giving back to the communities it serves is at the core of Capital One's identity and is of great importance to their associates. "It starts with Capital One's core values of 'Excellence' and 'Doing the Right Thing'," states Carolyn Berkowitz, Capital One's Vice President of Community Affairs. "Those values guide the choices we make, how we operate our business and how we engage with our associates, customers, shareholders,
partners and the surrounding communities."
Capital One is also part of our communities - they have a stake in building safe, healthy and vibrant communities, just like other businesses, community leaders and the people who live there, including their associates and customers. Their goal is to help build vibrant and healthy communities where people want to live, raise their families and send their children to school and where businesses
can thrive. We all have a stake in helping communities reach that goal.
History of Support
Since 2000, North Fork Bank - now Capital One Bank - has been an active and steadfast supporter of Safe Horizon's inventive and expert services for children. To date the company has committed over $1.3 million to Safe Horizon and has been a key supporter of our wide-reaching child abuse awareness campaigns.
It all started in the days following 9/11. Families had been displaced, breadwinners were missing, jobs were lost. Safe Horizon saw the need for immediate assistance. With the help of North Fork Bank, Safe Horizon was able to provide something that no other organization in the city could - immediate financial support within a few days after the attacks. Checks were given on the spot to over 55,000
people in need. This would not have been possible without North Fork Bank.

In 2006, following the tragic death of seven-year-old Nixzmary Brown from severe abuse, Safe Horizon saw a city in grief and outrage. North Fork responded again by sponsoring our Stop Child Abuse campaign - within 24 hours of our request. When Safe Horizon saw a surge of child abuse cases being referred to our Child Advocacy Centers - at times up to 400% of their regular case
load - Safe Horizon saw the need for extended hours and staffing. North Fork responded, committing $500,000 to allow the centers to sustain themselves and expand.
Such responsiveness in a large corporation is rare and speaks volumes about their trust of Safe Horizon and their commitment to our communities. All of us at Safe Horizon wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the entire team at Capital One for not only continuing North Fork Bank's commitment to Safe Horizon's work in this area, but also for becoming the leading national sponsor of Hope Shining. Capital One is a true partner - ready to take the lead in taking a public stand on this hidden issue. With their generosity and vision, Hope Shining is well on its way to achieving its mission of increasing awareness, prevention, and support services for children, families, and communities impacted by violence and abuse. We appreciate their support and applaud their commitment to children
